Golf Course
There are two championship golf courses
at Waikoloa. Both designed by the leading names in golf today. Whether
you're a beginner or a pro, you'll find the challenge exhilarating and
the scenery breathtaking.
The scenic splendor of the Kohala Coast borders the spectacular
Waikoloa Beach Resort course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. ,
and the majesty of Hawaii's extinct volcanoes is a dramatic backdrop
for the famed Waikoloa Kings' Course, a Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish
design. Set amid the lava fields and adjacent to the ocean, the
Waikoloa courses offer fabulous golf for all skill levels, and are
among the very best in Hawaii.
The Waikoloa Beach course's signature 12th hole has a larger than
average water hazard. This dogleg par 5 is more than just a challenge
for golfers; it doubles as a perfect vantage point for whale watching
during winter months. Keep your eye on the ball!
Beach Course
Winding its way through ancient lava
fields along the breathtaking Kohala coastline, Waikoloa’s Beach
Course is, quite simply, resort golf at its finest. But don’t let the
swaying coconut trees and gentle ocean breeze lull you into a false
sense of security. The Beach Course can also be a significant
challenge for quality players. The classic Robert Trent Jones Jr.
design was literally carved from the lava flow along the picturesque
Anaeho’omalu Bay. Immaculate greens are well-guarded by numerous white
sand bunkers and strategically placed water features. The crowning
glory of the Beach Course is the 502-yard par 5 twelfth—known
throughout the islands as the most spectacular oceanfront par-five in
Hawaii. Not only is it a challenging golf hole, it’s a great place to
watch humpback whales and catch splendid views of the other Hawaiian
Islands. Par 70, 6566 yards, Slope: 134, Rating 71.6.
Kings Course
For a rigorous test of golf skills, no
facility on the Kohala Coast compares with Waikoloa’s unique Kings’
Course. Designed by former British Open champion Tom Weiskopf and Jay
Morrish, the Kings’ Course offers golfers the best of two worlds; golf
in an island paradise, on a course that more closely resembles a
layout along the coast of Scotland. But with stunning views of the
towering volcanoes of the Big Island framed by palm trees and vibrant
flowers, you’ll have no trouble remembering that you’re golfing in
paradise. The 7,000-plus yard links-style course snakes over and
around an ancient lava flow and is best known for its wide undulating
fairways, multiple tee placements, and challenging pot bunkers. To
complete the Scottish links experience there’s even a double green at
holes 3 and 6. Par 72, 7074 yards, Slope: 135, Rating: 73.4.
Putting Course
The 30,000 square foot Seaside Putting
Course was designed by renowned golf architect Robin Nelson of Nelson
and Haworth. Challenging putting greens are interspersed with sand
traps and water features. Building on the award-winning landscape
design in place at Hilton Waikoloa Village®, the course has been
planted with species indigenous to Hawaii's Big Island. Signage along
the course offers an informative, self-guided botanical tour of some
of these many interesting plant species. The beautiful pond on the
course includes unique rock features and small waterfalls as well as
flourishing rainbow-colored lilies and brightly colored koi (carp).
The course is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. and play includes
putter, golf balls, scorecards and ball markers. Groups will find this
area particularly attractive for sunset receptions and team-building
golf events for all attendees, whether golfers or not. |

Tennis
Kohala Tennis at the Hilton Waikoloa
Village® is proud to present its eight PlexiCushion Hard Courts,
including one stadium court, surrounded by a beautiful garden setting.
Our superb tennis professionals offer lessons daily to both
individuals and groups.
The 432-seat stadium court plays host to tournaments and invitational,
as well as intramural competition between in-house groups. Fans and
family members can cheer on their favorite players as they ace
opponents on this professional-level stadium court.
Nature and Wildlife
The 62 acres of Hilton Waikoloa Village®
is home to hundreds of varieties of plants and numerous species of
wildlife. We offer our visitors a free booklet, Botanical Tours and
Waikoloa Wildlife, that provides wildlife information as well as
several self-guided botanical tours of its property, including three
walking tours and one boat tour. The booklet points out numerous
botanical highlights and provides a color photo and description of
each plant, as well as its significance in both ancient and modern-day
life in Hawaii. The first tour
leads visitors from the Main Lobby to Lagoon Tower at the south end of
the property, following the lagoon shoreline along the way.
On the second walking tour visitors
stroll from the Lagoon Cafe restaurant around the serene lagoon that
is a focal point of the resort and flows into the Pacific Ocean's
Waiulua Bay.
The third walking tour begins at the
main entrance to Palace Tower and meanders along the coastline of
Waiulua Bay to the north, until it reaches the Seaside Putting Course.
Those interested in gaining a glance
at several of the plants highlighted in the walking tours, along with
many others, all from the luxury of a boat, can take Hilton Waikoloa
Village's complimentary canal boat that meanders throughout the
property. To follow the self-guided tour information in the booklet,
begin at the Boat Landing Pavilion at Ocean Tower. Watch for the
weeping fig banyan tree with its prop roots and multiple trunks. The
octopus tree's long floral arms radiating from its crown mimics those
of an octopus. Fruit from the noni tree is rancid in taste but
considered to have exceptional medicinal and nutritional values. In
ancient times the wiliwili haole tree was the preferred wood for
surfboards, canoe outriggers and net floats. Countless other trees and
flowers also are described along the winding canal.
During tours, in addition to the
abundance of diverse plant life, visitors may encounter wildlife as
well. Hilton Waikoloa Village is home to numerous species of birds and
marine life. The booklet describes the species as well as where
visitors may encounter them throughout the resort. Potential bird
sightings include several types of swans and pheasants, cranes,
flamingos, parrots and nene, Hawaii's state bird and the only goose
endemic (native) to the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, red footed
tortoises and honu, or green sea turtles, often can be spotted. Of
course, all types of colorful salt water fish can be found swimming
throughout the salt water boatway and in the salt water aquariums at
Kamuela Provision Company™. Approximately 1,200 koi, or Japanese carp,
also make their home in the ponds at the Seaside Putting Course and at
Imari™ and Palm Terrace restaurants. For those wildlife watchers who
don't get their fill simply wandering the resort acres, Hilton
Waikoloa Village's Wildlife Specialists plan complimentary and
educational "Parrot Talks" Mondays and Saturdays at the base of the
Grand Staircase and "Fish Frenzy" programs Tuesdays and Fridays at the
Lagoon Tower boat landing, both at 10 a.m.
